Sebastián Piñera, the putative candidate for the
opposition Alianza por Chile in next year's presidential elections, would
comfortably beat any candidate the ruling Concertación chose to field against
him, according to a poll conducted in the wake of the recent municipal
elections. Piñera was buoyed by the performance of his party Renovación Nacional
(RN), which displaced the Unión Demócrata Independiente (UDI) as the senior
partner in the Alianza and gave him a genuine national support base after the
municipal elections. He will be looking to exploit what is sure to be a tough
year for the government on the economic front.
